Examples
For our examples, we are taking two academic employees hired at 50% time.
| Annual Pay Rate | Basis Paid Over | Calculated Monthly | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Person A | $26,136.00 | 09/09 | $2,904.00 (1/9th of annual) |
| Person B | $26,136.00 | 09/12 | $2,178.00 (1/12th of annual) |
| What To Do | Our Example - Person A&B | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Use Academic Calendar to determine teaching days in the quarter | Fall Quarter 2003 (9/22 - 12/13/03) Total teaching days: 60 (Sept. = 7; Oct. = 23; Nov. = 20, Dec. = 10) |
| 2 | Determine days employee worked | Sept. = 6; Oct. = 23; Nov. = 20, Dec. = 10 Total days worked: 59 |
| 3 | Calculate quarterly rate (annual rate) ÷ (teaching quarters) = (quarterly rate) |
$26,136.00 ÷ 3 = $8,712.00 |
| 4 | Calculate daily rate (quarterly rate) ÷ (teaching days in qtr) = (daily rate) |
$8,712.00 ÷ 60 = $145.20 |
| 5 | Calculate payment for partial quarter service (daily rate) × (percentage of appt.) × (days worked) = (payment) |
$145.20 × 0.50 × 59 = $4,283.40 |
| What to do | Person A (Bas/Pd Ovr is 09/09) |
Person B (Bas/Pd Ovr is 09/12) |
|
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Calculate total months to be paid, as though the employee worked the entire quarter (% appt.) × (months in qtr) = (months of pay) |
0.50 × 3* = 1.50 | 0.50 × 4** = 2.00 |
| 2 | Get percentage of days worked (days worked) ÷ (teaching days) = % days |
59 ÷ 60 = 0.9833 | 59 ÷ 60 = 0.9833 |
| 3 | Calculate total percentage to be paid for quarter (step 1 result) × (step 2 result) |
1.50 × 0.9833 = 1.4750* | 2.00 × 0.9833 = 1.9666** |
| 4 | Calculate total quarter pay (step 3 result) × (pay rate) |
1.4750 × $2,904.00 = $4,283.40 | 1.9666 × $2,178.00 = $4,283.25
(note difference due to rounding) |
**For appointees with a basis paid of 09/12, their "quarter" is composed of 4 months. Three of the months of their quarter will be paid at the normal rate, with the difference of 0.4666 to be paid in the month they did not work the full schedule.
